چکیده

The effect of respiratory alkalosis on survival in hemorrhagic shock was studied in pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs. Since cell membranes are relatively poorly permeable to bicarbonate ion, production of alkalosis by hyperventilation may influence intracellular pH more than by bicarbonate infusion. Hyperventilation was produced by increasing tidal volume in one group of dogs. Spontaneously breathing dogs served as controls. Another control group in which ventilation was maintained with a respirator to produce normal blood gas values was also studied. Shock was produced by arterial bleeding at a fixed rate to maintain blood pressure at 50 mm Hg for 90 min, then at 30 mm Hg for 45 min. The blood was then reinfused. In the hyperventilation group 7 of 9 animals survived 480 min with a blood pressure greater than 75 mm Hg, while none of 8 in the control group and none of 7 in which ventilation was maintained at the normal level survived with these criteria. Arterial pH was higher in tlie hyperventilation than the other groups, while differences in Pao2 were not significant throughout most of the experiment. Hyperventilation improved survival and hemorrhagic shock, probably related to the changes in pH. ADDITIONAL

Effect of ATP-MgCl2-hypertonic solution (NaCl5%) administration on hemorrhagic shock

Introduction: In the recent years, effect of hypertonic solution in resuscitation of shock has been shown by clinical and laboratory studies. On the other hand ATP-MgCl2 is used for better tissue perfusion and cardiac output in shock. The aim of this study is evaluation of ATP-MgCl2 with hypertonic solution in resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock. Materials and Methods: In this experimental stud...

Metabolic acidosis and halothane anaesthesia. A case report.

Although the effects of anaesthetic agents on the normal ionic balance of the blood have been carefully studied, little attention has been given to the anaesthetic management of the patient whose electrolytic balance has been upset by disease. Derangements of the acid-base balance are rarely encountered in patients selected for elective surgical therapy, but a metabolic acidosis may occur in th...

METABOLIC ACIDOSIS AND SEVERE HYPOTENSION: INFLUENCE ON SURVIVAL TIME AND SHOCK PERIOD DURING HEMORRHAGE IN THE CAT

Metabolic acidosis and severe hypotension are the main causes of irreversibility during hemorrhagic shock. The influence of these two factors on durations of shock period and survival time were studied in four groups of anesthetized cats. In group I the animals were made hypotensive by reducing mean arterial blood pressure (Pa) to 45 mmHg with concurrent metabolic acidosis. [n group II the ...

p-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate, an Intermediate of the Phe/Tyr Catabolism, Improves Mitochondrial Oxidative Metabolism under Stressing Conditions and Prolongs Survival in Rats Subjected to Profound Hemorrhagic Shock

The aim of this study was to test the effect of a small volume administration of p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate (pHPP) in a rat model of profound hemorrhagic shock and to assess a possible metabolic mechanism of action of the compound. The results obtained show that hemorrhaged rats treated with 2-4% of the estimated blood volume of pHPP survived significantly longer (p<0.001) than rats treated with v...
